In a bid to remove as much plastic as possible from its own label range, convenience store Spar has announced that it has succeeded in removing almost 300 tonnes of virgin plastic from 53 such products, with the plan being to eliminate single-use plastic from this range altogether by 2025.

Other eco-friendly commitments the brand has made include using an average of 30 per cent recycled content in plastic packaging and ensuring that 100 per cent of plastic packaging is either recyclable, reusable or compostable, the Retail Times reports.

It also works with numerous apps like Gander, Too Good to Go and Ubamarket to help reduce food waste, while supporting charitable food distributors around the UK.

Cath McIlwham, head of corporate social responsibility, was quoted by the news source as saying: “A year ago we made a huge commitment to eliminate black plastic from our Spar own label packaging range by the end of 2020 and we are delighted to be working well ahead of our target.

“We know that protecting the planet for the future is important to our customers and retailers and we have shown how committed we are to reducing the amount of plastic we use and ensuring packaging is recyclable where possible.”

Similarly, Woolworths is now making the move to get rid of plastic packaging for fruit and vegetables, saying that in the last 12 months it has succeeded in saving 237 tonnes of plastic packaging by switching to eco-friendly alternatives.
