Packaging for washing machines and other belongings

Moving home is a traumatic event at the best of times and the last thing you want to see at your new property is your treasured belongings in bits when you open all the boxes. Proper packaging can ensure that this does not happen, assuming the removal men take reasonable precautions when transporting your more delicate ornaments. Electrical appliances are fairly robust these days and some of them do not need any packaging at all. It is still a good idea to wrap them in a blanket though, to avoid them getting scratched during the move. It would be a shame to ruin the appearance of a brand new washer dryer because you were in too much of a hurry. Breakable objects such as glasses and china plates can be wrapped in plenty of newspaper and carefully placed in a strong cardboard box. Alternatively, bubble wrap can be used instead of newspaper. Expensive hardwood furniture could be covered with blankets too, to avoid them getting damaged, or you could just tip the removal men and ask them to be extra careful.

In reality it should not be necessary to wrap up tables and chairs for a move. All electrical units should be unplugged and boxed up before they are loaded onto a van. If possible then it is best to use the original boxes that they came in but as many people throw these away it may be necessary to buy some new cartons of a suitable size. Items like washing machines should be completely drained before they are moved, to ensure that water does not leak from them and damage your other possessions while in transit. Books and magazines can be placed in boxes without any padding and simply sealed so they are ready to go. With paintings, there are two options. They can either be taken in their frames or, if they are particularly valuable, it may be better to remove the canvas and carefully roll it up before moving them. Tumble driers should not need draining but, along with washer dryers, may benefit from being wrapped in a blanket to protect the paintwork.

If your electrical devices are quite old then it may just be simpler to leave them in the old property and buy new ones for your new home. This can save a lot of heavy lifting and enables you to buy ones that will fit in with the décor of the new property. Polystyrene balls are cheap to buy and make a good filler for boxes containing breakable objects. Once the items have been placed in the box, the balls can simply be poured in until the box is full. Microwaves and kettles can be placed in boxes with some padding to protect them from any accidental knocks that they may receive. Vacuum cleaners are generally fine to be loaded loose although if you are particularly fond of yours then there is no harm in wrapping it in a blanket or perhaps some newspaper.
